According to the WHO World Health Statistics 2007, "The exact number of people living with HIV is unknown. ...the size of the epidemic had been overestimated previously but also it is still growing." The present estimate is that 39.5 million people are infected with HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, including two million children in Africa.

The herbal supplement mix was given to half of the patients in a commercially available soy/milk product which had added vitamins added. The patients receiving the placebo got only the soy/milk and vitamins without the herbal mix. None of the patients knew what they were getting. Throughout the trial, patients in both groups had blood tests performed by registered pathology labs to measure blood levels of CD4.
